Community Schools

A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development, and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities. Community schools offer a personalized curriculum that emphasizes real-world learning and community problem-solving. Schools become centers of the community and are open to everyone – all day, every day, evenings and weekends.

Cincinnatti is a city that definitely is home and hub to what is rapidly spreading as a solution as communities look for powerful replacements for more superficial reform efforts. This is also bringing some confusion as "community schools" is both a kind of important general descriptor and a specfic set of practices and resources that the Coaltion of Community Schools has been stitching together.

We embrace both. No one can own a great concept AND how great that so many people have built up a history and distinct set of tools for communities, educators, young people, and policy makers to work with.
