Bill McKibben, that insightful activist and writer about ecology and the future of our world, wrote an “Editor’s Note” for the recent issue of Edutopia magazine about the importance of young people learning about sustainability. I couldn’t help but think something crucial was missing in his note, and so I posted a comment that was published online. Here’s a glimpse from my comment:
Until and unless our schools are empowering, democratic, and respectful places in and of themselves we can not expect our young people to work to create empowering, democratic, and respectful societies, and that especially means working for a more sustainable and ecologically-friendly world.
